  1. The band really began to make something beyond just underground rock on this album. Songs began to get a bit more cohesive and more sprawling. This is where they begin to get important. This is also the first album to feature Steve Shelley on drums. "Star Power" and "Expressway to Yr Skull" on their own are reason enough to start a band.
  2. Cresting on the album’s pièce de résistance, ‘Shadow of a Doubt’ and the clanging mantra of ‘Green Light’, Side One of EVOL comes and goes like a passing chimera. But it’s Side Two where Sonic Youth come into their brazen, idiosyncratic own.
  3. The musicality is more accessible than with Confusion and Bad Moon Rising but it's still Sonic Youth and it captures their Branca influence strongly. I would rate this alongside Evol, Sister, the Whitey Album, Goo and Sonic Nurse as the very best albums capturing their development/5(21).
  4. General Commenti always thought that this song was about getting married, about living your life with another person ("You take me and i'll take you") but first "leaving" your other life, or your life before the wedding ("you kill him and i'll kill her") The "Kiss me in the shadow of a doubt" refers to the uncertainty of everything and the love and strenght you get from your man/wife.
  5. Jan 24,  · Album: EVOL Artist: Sonic Youth Released: May 1st, Highlights: Tom Violence, Shadow of a Doubt, Starpower, Expressway to Yr. Skull. There are, quite naturally, plenty of elements to be found in “EVOL” – Sonic Youth’s third album – that can be easily linked to pieces of the two full-length releases that preceded it: “Confusion Is Sex” and “Bad Moon Rising”.
  6. May 13,  · Shadow of a Doubt is my favorite track, but their all good. "In The Kingdom #19" might sound odd to conventional music listeners, but give it a chance. I reccomend this to all Sonic Youth fans who have yet to hear it, and all music fans with open minds, who want to be delighted bythe array of guitar noises that can be so noisy, yet so beautiful.
  7. The band was still determined to play things loud and dirty, but the arrival of drummer Steve Shelley gave Sonic Youth an elastic dimension that was immediately clear with its powerful new material. The opener here, "Tom Violence," plods with a heavy metal band's intensity in its ringing discordance, while "Shadow of a Doubt" follows with.
